Formentera, the last pearl of the Mediterranean located less than 300
kilometers from Barcelona and the Spanish peninsula, is the smallest of the Balearic and Pitiusa (Ibiza & Formentera) Islands. Located 11 miles south of Ibiza, it has a population of about 5000 people. It has a pleasant and temperate climate (which never reaches extreme temperatures at any time of year) with an average temperature of 18 C. The morphology of the
island is singular with two promontories in its two extremities. It is flat
except for the plateau of the Mola which is only 192 meters high. Without a
doubt the most attractive parts of the island are the beaches with crystal
clear water and fine white sand which reminds one of paradise. Of course
a holiday on the island of Formentera is an unforgettable experience.

LOCATIONS OF FORMENTERA

The Savina, the main port of the island, is where the boats dock that link
the small Pitiusa with Ibiza in 25 minutes. It has the installations of the
yatching harbour (marina), various cafeterias and a hippy market. When
arriving in the port of the Savina from Ibiza, the traveler feels the change
in rhythm because everything is much more relaxed.

Illetas beach and Levante beach (also known as the Tanga beach) are two of the most famous beaches of the island. Located on the northern end of the island and on opposite sides, Illetas faces the west and from there you can watch spectacular sunsets in the limpid Formentera sky. Both of these beaches, with their fine white sand and crystal clear water, amaze every traveller who is eager to relax in a dream world. Surprisingly enough, there are no buildings or construction in the varous kilometers of these beaches because they are part of a protected nature area.

Cala Saona. This is a cove facing west on the western side of the island
which is also famous for its splendid sunsets. The beach is much smaller
than the previous ones and is surrounded by cliffs from where you have
marvelous views of the beach and the turquoise-colored water that is so
characteristic of the sea in Formentera.

Es Pujols. This is the only beach located in an urban center (the most
touristy of the island) which is made up of various boathouses of the
fishermen who still catch fish in the traditional way and a beach
promenade full of bars and restaurants where the tourists can relax and
enjoy a drink or a meal on the terraces with a sea view. Every afternoon
on this promenade there is a bustling and charming hippy market. As an
urban center Es Pujols offers everything that a tourist could need:
supermarkets, all kinds of restaurants, bars, terraces, diversions and even a discotheque, the Xueno.

Es Calo. More than a beach, this is actually a small fishing port with
boathouses and crystal clear water that invites the traveler to go for a
swim. It’s located next to the fishing village of Es Calo where various
restaurants serve fresh fish and specialties of the island.

Mitjorn. This is the longest beach on the island which makes it an ideal
place for nautical sports. There are about 5 kilometers of white sand
facing south. In different places you’ll find various beach bars and
restaurants where you can have a good meal or a drink right next to the
beach.

Sant Francesc. This is the capital of the island where the fortress church,
the Town Hall, the post office and the schools are located. In the morning
in the only pedestrian area you can visit the hippy market to brouse and
buy all kinds of local and exotic souvenirs along with all kinds of shops
and boutiques. San Francisco is bustling with life every morning and you
can also enjoy a pleasant walk along its streets at dusk when the sky
takes on the colors that are so characteristic of the island. In the capital
you can also visit the ethnological museum where you can contemplate the very old worktools used by the inhabitants of the island.

Sant Ferran. Located in the geographical center of the island, this
small “rural” town has grown little by little but has kept the tranquility that
characterizes the island. It is also known as the meeting place for
the “hippy community” and in the church square there are various cultural
performances (concerts, plays...) several nights during the week.

El Pilar. Located on the plateau of the promontory of the Mola, this is
perhaps the town that has best kept its local charm and peacefulness,
maybe because of its distance from the port (17 kilometers). Every Sunday
and Wednesday afternoon there is an authentic hippy market where you
can by authentic handicrafts. El Pilar is located just 2 kilometers from the
lighthouse of the Mola which is an essential visit for every traveler who
wants to delight himself with the beautiful view of the vast blue sea of
Formentera.

PLACES OF INTEREST

All of the northern area of the island which includes the two lakes (the
Estany d’es Peix and the Estany Pudent) as well as the salt flats (formerly
an authentic source of income for the people of the island) is part of the
nature reserve of Formentera. In both lakes during specific times of the
year you can contemplate the migratory birds that flee the cold of northern
Europe on their trip to Africa.

The lookout point of the Mola (halfway between Es Calo and El Pilar) is
without a doubt the most well-known panoramic view of the island where
you can see the whole island. The view has a magical aura at dusk when
the sun sets and the sky turns different colors.

The megalithic monument of Ca na Costa, the Roman Castellum of Can Blai, the Capela of the Tanca Vella and the various defense towers (Punta de la Gavina, Pi des Català, Punta Prima, s’Espalmador and Cap de Barbaria) rise up as relics of the historic past when various civilizations left their mark on the small Pitiusa.

Although the peacefulness that characterizes the smallest of the Balearic
Islands is the main reason that many travellers come to the island, there
are also many places of diversion and entertainment where young people
go to have a good time, listen to music, talk, dance, or have a drink...”in
Formentera, everyone finds what they’re looking for.”

To conclude, due to the geographical characteristics of the island, the ideal means of transport to enjoy the scenery is by bicycle which respects the environment since it doesn’t contaminate and also helps the tourist to
forget the hectic rhythm of city life. To take advantage of these natural
resources, there are a series of signposts pointing out the green pathway
tours where you can go on foot or by bicycle to admire this unknown until
now scenery, in direct contact with the nature of the island.

We want to wish you a happy holiday on the island of your dreams where
you can enjoy the scenery, the beaches and the delicious food as well as
the warmth and pleasant welcome of the local people.
